May 2024 Newsletter

Dear Member,

As we now move towards the end of May I'm pleased to say that we have at long last been able to enjoy some warm, sunny days without that cold biting wind that we have endured for so long. Our gardens, our window boxes, our containers and tubs are now getting ready to burst into life with colour and brightness. I hope you are ready to enjoy it all!

Since the last newsletter in March the Society has been particularly busy. We have had one monthly meeting in the Parish Hall; the Spring Mini Show has been successfully staged; an outing to RHS Hyde Hall has taken place and the Spring Plant Sale has provided many members with top quality plants delivered straight to their front doors. The monthly meeting on Tuesday 19th March saw John Hughes give an interesting talk about Kew Gardens. Over forty members came along and enjoyed John's slides and narrative together with refreshments and the raffle. The Spring Mini Show on Tuesday 16th April was very successful with more exhibits than we have had before and more members and guests voting for their favourites on the night. The committee is very grateful for your continued support of these shows and we hope we can continue to add to their success, and with this in mind, please do not hesitate to speak to any of us if you have an idea or two that can help us move forward. The outing to Hyde Hall on Sunday 28th April took place on a rather dreary and chilly day but it was not enough to dampen the spirits of the twenty or so members who came along. The gardens have grown and developed massively since they first opened, and the restaurants provided excellent opportunities for us to warm up and enjoy a snack or two. I hope that everyone who came along had an enjoyable day. The Spring Plant Sale, held on Friday 17th May, made a surplus of just under 500 going, of course, directly to Society funds. Forty two members ordered plants and seven Society members did a magnificent job in delivering them. The nursery was unable to provide us with the non-stop begonias, so apologies to the ten members who ordered them but I hope that, in general, everything else was satisfactory. Thank you very much for your support of this event.

Well, that's enough of what we have done and I'm sure you'll want to know what's coming up in the next couple of months.

First, we have the Summer Mini Show on Tuesday 18th June in the Parish Hall. Attached to this newsletter is the sheet detailing the exhibit categories and how to enter. I know you will do your very best to make this show the best yet. If you are unsure or undecided as to whether you should exhibit then please do not hesitate to have a go and in doing so contribute to a happy and fun evening.

Second, you will find attached the flyer for our trip to Hever Castle and Gardens in Kent, on Sunday 7th July. The cost is 39 and we appreciate that this is a lot of money but we have done our best to keep it as low as possible. Our coach trips have always been entertaining and interesting days out and I hope we can continue this with our trip to Hever. Non-members are very welcome to come along and I look forward to seeing you on the 7th. It will help us immensely if you can please return your form to Brenda no later than Friday 7th June.

As usual, if you have any problems with printing either the Summer Show sheet or the Hever Castle flyer please speak to myself or Alan Ward (01277 225587) and we will get them to you.

Let's hope the weather continues to improve and I trust you will have an enjoyable summer.
